The Institute of Real Estate Technologies (or IRET, as it's more affectionately known) was founded in 1992 by our Director, Ken Jones, an award-winning real estate broker, a builder and an appraiser since 1971.
Originally based in East Brunswick, New Jersey, Ken initially created and instructed a full menu of state-approved 30-hour real estate pre-licensing appraisal courses which he provided to local real estate professionals seeking to obtain a real estate appraiser license or certification in compliance with the, then, newly enacted and federally mandated real estate appraiser licensing law.
Ken also created and instructed his own state-approved 15-hour course on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) prior to the recently mandated 15-Hour and 7-Hour USPAP course and update, respectively, created by the Appraisal Foundation.
The appraiser licensing law also required licensed appraisers to obtain a minimum number of hours of state-approved continuing education in order to renew their license. In response to the anticipated demand caused by this requirement, in 1993 Ken changed IRET's focus from providing pre-licensing courses to developing and providing unique, high-quality state-approved continuing education seminars to real estate appraisers throughout the United States.
At about that same time, more and more states began to require continuing professional education for their licensed real estate sales agents and brokers. And, again, Ken expanded IRET's professional education services by developing continuing education seminars designed specifically for real estate agents.
More recently, and in response to changes in the legal relationships between consumers (buyers and sellers) and real estate agents, combined with growth in real estate investing, Ken has developed several informative seminars specifically for the benefit of the real estate consumer and investor.
At IRET our purpose is simple: Provide useful information and training in all aspects of real estate to all who seek this knowledge; present it in an easy-to-understand and entertaining manner; and provide it at a fair price.
